Going into this tour, I was most excited about seeing Vienna. I think I just built it up so so much in my head that the actual city just really fell flat for me. At first, I was a little crushed. I had dreamt about it for years and then I was totally underwhelmed. But! I still think that Vienna is somewhere to check out even if its for 36 hours. Below are some things that you should for sure see while you're there!
The Austrians know how to eat. Specifically, schnitzel. Usually, it is a very tender cut of veal coated in breadcrumbs and fried but I opted for chicken because well, its basically a huge chicken nugget. Also, the sweets are to die for! There are several places you can enjoy traditional Viennese cuisine but, the best places are where you will only find locals! I'm so disappointed I did not write down where we were but, I do know it was close to the Albertina museum. Another famous cafe in Vienna is known for being where Hitler and other famous men in history liked to dine when in town. This is called Cafe Central, which has so many choices for sweets and other breakfast and lunch items. It's very surreal to be in a place so full of history, even if the people its known for visiting weren't the greatest.
Vienna is also known for their museums. I would recommend the House of Music and/or Albertina. Vienna is known for it's wonderful classical music. Being the home of several classical composers, Vienna, has classical concerts all year round. But one place dedicated to music is the museum called House of Music. A fun, low-key museum that teaches you about music, but mostly is just a great way to spend the evening! Albertina is an art museum, one of the best in the world. There are several floors with different art vibes including photography, expressionism, and realism. Art museums are normally not my jam, but I did enjoy wondering around the exhibits and feeling v cultured in Vienna.
We also had a tour of the Schönbrunn castle (pictured above), which was also worthwhile. This was probably my favorite part about Vienna. I loved walking through each of the rooms and seeing all of the beautiful furniture and furnishings. Each room was different. The castle is very strict about photography inside but our tour guide was nice enough to "look the other way" when there wasn't another employee in the room. The garden in the rear of the castle was gorgeous, if it hadn't been down pouring I would have spent more time taking pictures and exploring the grounds.
Vienna, thanks for being a classy lady for us. I can't wait to visit Austria again, but maybe on to Salzburg or Hallstatt. You were a bucket list item for sure, who knows... I may be back someday!
As always, thanks for reading! Next stop is a complete 180... can't wait to share with you all.
Until next time,
